VICTOR PAUL MEADOR
20 October 1920 - 02 March 2010

Victor Paul Meador was born in Independence, MO, on October 20, 1920, and passed away March 2, 2010.

He was the son of Samuel Fletcher and Mary Louise (Kinney) Meador.

He attended schools in Independence through his sophomore year of high school, then one half-year in Kansas City, and graduated from Gallatin County High School in Bozeman, Montana, in 1940.

In World War II, he enlisted in the 87th Observation Squadron as an aerial cameraman. After Pearl Harbor, he volunteered for training as a fighter pilot, and after commisioning was assigned to the 31st Fighter Group in Africa and Italy, flying 75 combat missions in English Spitfire and P-51 Mustang fighter planes.

When he returned from Italy in 1944, he married the late Katherine Vorgias and they had three children.

He was a lithographic cameraman for several large companies in Kansas City, retiring in 1982.

He continued photography as a hobby, with many of his own pictures decorating his home.

Victor became interested in genealogy in 1946, when he found that his grandfather, Francis M. Meador, had built many of the covered bridges in Jackson County.

During the next 50 years, he collected enough family data to publish five volumes detailing the family through sixteen generations and 47,600 descendants.

He joined the Jackson County Genealogical Society in 1983, and served as extractions chairman, then as President in 1988-1990.

He has compiled and edited seventeen volumes of Jackson County records. He became the local authority on pioneer cemetaries, with new research on some 180 family and rural burial grounds. Victor very much enjoyed his work at the library and continued volunteering until just before his death.

Victor joined the Delaware Crossing Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution in 1986. He served as President, then as State Secretary, and ten years as Treasurer of the Kansas Society, and as a Trustee of the George Washington Birthday Celebration. Victor was active in the SAR until 2009.

He was preceded in death by his parents in 1934 and 1937, by his ten siblings, by his wife in 1986, and by a grandchild, Amy Marie Semrau, in 1977.

He is survived by his three children - Norman Eugene Meador and Bobbye Henderson of Yukon, OK; Timothy Paul and wife Mary Quinn Meador of Kansas City, MO; Melodie Sue Jones of Davidson, NC; grandchildren Raymond M. Massey and great-grandchildren, Cameron Elizabeth, Ethan Fade, Ronin Seth and Tyler William of Chandler, AZ; Sarah Katherine and husband Casey Battle of Kansas City, MO; Jesse Paul Meador and Margaret Cameron of Kansas City, MO; and his longtime friend and companion, Dorothy Beem, of Independence, MO.

A "Celebration of Life" in honor of Victor will be 10:00 to 12:00 p.m. Friday, at DW Newcomer's Sons Noland Road Chapel, 509 South Noland Road, Independence.

Graveside service with full military honors will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Independence.
