Frank Alvin (Al) McCurry, 84, of San Manuel, died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at El Dorado Hospital in Tucson.

Al was born in 1919 in Canon City, Colorado, graduated from Canon City High School in 1938, and served as a Naval Aviator in World War II. He was a resident of San Manuel for the past 48 years. In 1955 he arrived and began employment with the San Manuel Copper Corporation, where he worked as a pipefitter in the mine, smelter and mill. He completed his career as a general mechanical repair foreman and retired in 1981.

Al was a summer resident of Lakeside since his retirement. He lived at the Ponderosa RV Park on Woodland Road and previously at Hon Dah. Al loved the White Mountains and all outdoor activities. He was associated with the beginnings of Little League baseball in San Manuel, was a member of the Elks Club for 63 years and served as the local Exalted Ruler from 1960-1961. During his tenure, the ritual team participated in and won the State Elks Ritual Competition; and then placed third in the Nationals. He was an accomplished softball pitcher until age 54, and was an avid golfer for almost 30 years.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan T. McCurry, of San Manuel; Three surviving sons, David Newton (Teresa) of Annapolis, Maryland, Robert Newton (Sharon) of Show Low, and Douglas McCurry (Martha) of Tucson; five grand children include Paige Newton of Richmond, Virginia, Elizabeth Newton of San Diego, California, Robynn Newton of Los Angeles, California, Michael Newton of San Diego, California, and Caitlin McCurry of Tucson. His two great-grandchildren, Hayley and Joseph Newton of San Diego, California, brought him great comfort and joy in his later years.

Funeral service was held Thursday, May 22, at the Evergreen Cemetery Chapel at 3015 North Oracle Road in Tucson. A reception followed at the San Manuel Elks Club.
