2nd Lt Cox was killed while training with the 666th Navigational Training Squadron, 41st Nav. Training Group when C-60A Lodestar #42-55974 crashed on takeoff from Amarillo Army Airfield, Amarillo, Texas.
The airplane nosed down into the ground and crashed at 02:08 hours, ¾ of a mile beyond the runway while taking off on a return flight to their base at Monroe, Louisiana. Investigation could not determine a cause.
