Daniel was a victim of the Spanish Flu epidemic that ravished our country in 1918. He was stricken two days after entering the United States Army to serve our country in the time of war. He spent three weeks in the post hospital at Fort Screven before developing pneumonia and succumbing to his illness.

Summerville News, Shaw Section "Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Strickland were called to Chelsea, Ga., Friday to attend the funeral of their brother, Daniel Holbrook. The sympathy of the entire community goes to them in their sorrow. Daniel made this place his home for several months before he was called to the army. He had only been in training about three weeks when he was taken ill with the influenza, which developed pneumonia and caused his death."

The name on the tombstone is incorrect. It reads Daniel J. Holbrooks. The J should be before the Daniel and the last name should not have an s at the end. It should read J.Daniel Holbrook The stone is tipping over from its base.
