Brackett, Gustavus Benson: Chief of Div. of Pomology, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.
Born March 24, 1827, at Unity Me., son of Reuben and Elizabeth S. Brackett. Educated in public schools of Cincinnati 1838-41; Academy of Denmark, Ia., 1841-47. Served 3 years in the Civil War as captain of engineers; afterwards lieut.-col. in the Iowa Militia. Commander in charge of the Iowa exhibits, Centennial Expo., Phila. 1876; U.S. commander to the Paris Expo in 1878; Represented Pomology div., Dept. of Agrl. at Chicago Expo, 1893; practical nurseryman and horticulturist; was sec. for 2 years, and pres. for 4 years of the Iowa st. Hort. Soc.; was horticultural expert of the U.S. Comm. to Paris Expo. in 1900; member and sec. for two years of the Am. Pomology Soc.
Married Nov. 14, 1849, to Anna Houston. Home address: Denmark, Iowa.
