According to his death certificate, William was the son of Fred Gronemeier and Minnie Mauer. A woman named Wilhelmina "Minnie" Knohlkemper may have actually been William's mother, or she may have been his step-mother. The identity of his mother could not be determined at this time.

William married Caroline "Lena" Borgmann on 02 May 1889 in Caseo, Franklin County, Missouri. He was a farmer in north St. Louis County, Missouri, and they were the parents of 9 children, including a set of twins.

William suffered from chronic heart disease for many years. He died from heart failure 7 days after his 79th birthday.

He was survived by 9 children; 5 sisters (or half-sisters); and 20 grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on the afternoon of 16 Dec 1940 at the Charles J. Kron Funeral Home on Washington Boulevard in St. Louis.

William was buried next to his wife, Lena, who passed away in 1932.
