Retired Army Officer Had Brilliant Military Career
Funeral Rites To Be Held Tomorrow In St. John's Church, Washington

Alexandria, Va., Oct. 29—Col. Harry Newton Cootes, United States Army (retired), former commandant of Fort Myer, who died of a heart attack early today at his home here, will be buried Monday in Arlington National Cemetery.

Funeral services will be held in St. John's Church, Washington.

Colonel Cootes was born in Staunton, Va., April 2, 1874, and was graduated from Staunton Military Academy and Virginia Military Institute

Enlisted As Private
He began his army career during the Spanish-American War, enlisting as a private in Company L. Fourth Infantry, in 1898. He rose rapidly from the ranks, was commissioned second lieutenant on October 1, 1898, and advanced through successive grades until he was commissioned a colonel of cavalry in 1918.

He was aide to Secretary of War J. M. Dickinson in 1910-1911, to Maj. Gen. Hugh L. Scott, chief of staff, 1916-1917, to Secretary of War Newton D. Baker and to W. C. Forbes, Governor General of the Philippines, in 1909-1910.

Colonel Cootes was military attaché to Austria and Czechoslovakia from 1923 to 1926, and was awarded the Great Silver Cross of the Austrian Republic and the Military Cross of Czechoslovakia. His service medals included those for the war with Spain, the Cuban occupation, Philippine campaign, Mexican border campaign and the World War.

He was married in 1908 to Mary Lou Cook, of Norfolk, Va., who survives. Also surviving are a son, Merritt Cootes, a foreign service officer, and a daughter, Miss Mary E. D. Cootes.
