Bruce was born and raised in Philadelphia, the only child of Harry Crowthers and Dorothy Crowthers Buhl, both deceased. (Harry died just a couple months prior to Bruce's death.) Bruce is survived by wife Merilyn (nee Smith), daughter Kimberly (Chuck) and son Dennis and granddaughter Rachael. Also survived by stepmother Clarice, stepsister Brenda and stepbrother William. Bruce also lived in Mantua, Pitman, and Millville. He attended Clearview High School, Gloucester County College and enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Viet Nam with the U.S. 82nd and 101st Airborne. He was awarded a purple heart and a bronze star. He was a member of Operating Engineers local 825. He loved his Boston terriers and saltwater fish tanks.
