Donald Beaty George was the last of three sons born to Lillie Myrtle née Middaugh and John W. George. At the outset of his long military career, he was first a U.S. Marine from November 25, 1942 to May 20, 1946 serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He concluded service in the Marines as a Technical Sergeant (Gunny) with the Marine Air Depot Squadron One, First Marine Aircraft Wing. He married La Donna Barker on January 17, 1944, in Craven, North Carolina. Together they had two children. They later divorced. He attended collage, obtained a degree and then joined the U.S. Army and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on October 6, 1947. After which, he was quickly promoted to 1st Lieutenant. Next being promoted to Captain, on January 29, 1948. His promotion was quickly followed by combat tours in the Korean War. He returned to the U.S. and married Betty Lou Lance on June 26, 1953 in San Diego, California. Together they had three children. His next assignment was with the U.S. Army forces stationed in West Germany. He was next promoted to Major on August 15, 1957, then to Lieutenant Colonel on August 7, 1964. As a Lt.Col., he served multiple combat tours in the Vietnam War, including some covert operations, very likely with the furtive Phoenix Program. Throughout his military career, he primarily served in Armor, Artillery and later Missile commands. After the Army, he also worked with the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency). Don and Betty were formally divorced on January 31, 1979. Don later remarried again. For much of his life, Lt.Col. Don B. George was a extremely tough, hard, and an intensely critical military man. He passed away alone, just three days prior to his 72nd birthday. He was survived by all three former wives, his five children, and multiple grandchildren. (bio by: Jay Lance)
