Captain Emmet Caryle Gudger, 60, retired US Navy Officer died May 10 in a Washington, DC hospital after about two years of ill health. A native of Marshall, NC, and a former resident of Asheville, NC, Captain Gudger was a graduate of Chapel Hill with an A.B. degree in 1901. Receiving an appointment to the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1902, he rose to the rank of Commander, and was promoted to Captain soon after his service as Paymaster at the port of Brest, France, during the first World War period, awarded the Navy Cross. After the armistice he was decorated by the French government, he retired in 1940. Surviving Mrs. Gudger, the former Miss Gevevieve Walsh, daughter of the late U.S. Senator Thomas J Walsh of Montana, two daughters Elinor and Gloria, his mother Mrs. James Madison Gudger, Jr., of Asheville, and one sister Mrs. John W Langley of Pikeville, Ky.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander (SC) Emmett C. Gudger, United States Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession as Supply Officer, Base 7, where, in spite of many difficulties incident to delays in transportation, he successfully maintained a stock sufficient for all demands and was able to meet without delay the call for supplies to outfit the German ships taken over as a result of the armistice.
