B-17G #43-38026 took off, with a crew of 9, from England on a bombing mission over Magdeburg, Germany. They were attacked by enemy aircraft and shot down crashing in Hornburg, south of Brunswick, Germany. Only one member of the crew, 2nd Lt. Richard A. Houghten, was able to survive the crash.
Augustus was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
