Col. Brooks was born in Colon, Panama, a son of the late Thomas Vernon Brooks and Alice Johnston Brooks. He was a veteran of the Army. He retired as a Colonel and served as a field artillery officer during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
He is survived by his wife, Caroline Kimberly Brooks; a son, Thomas Vernon Brooks, III and wife, Athena of Asheville; daughters, Caroline Brooks Cofiori and her husband, Allen, of Fayetteville, and Lisa Anne Brooks Roberts and her husband, Mark, of Asheville; brother, Edwin Brooks of Sanford; and grandchildren Caroline Cofiori, Second Lt. Joseph Cofiori, Kristen Cofiori, Capt. Thomas Vernon Brooks IV, Corp. Jeremy Holder, Lauren Holder and William Holder.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at the funeral home.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Banks and Army Chaplain Jeff Smith officiating.
Burial will follow at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at 9 a.m. with full military rites.
