Born on October 14, 1875 in Cobleskill, New York. Son of John Marvin and Eva (Müller). Dean. He married Alice Beatrice Fisken on January 19, 1903. He died November 10, 1935 (aged 60) at Roanoke, Roanoke, Virginia. Commissioned captain Infantry Illinois Reserve Militia, Chaplain O.R.C., 1919, U.S. Army. Buried at Arlington National Cemetery. In 1926, Dr. John Marvin Dean, pastor of the Hinson Memorial Baptist Church in Portland, 1927-1929, baptized Herbert W. Armstrong by immersion at a Sunday evening baptismal ceremony. Dr. Dean, when pastor of Second Baptist Church of Chicago, 1913-1918, became founding President of Northern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Dean later served as Pastor, First Baptist Church, in Pasadena, California, 1921-1927. He also served as President of Western Theological Seminary, officially dedicated October 4, 1927, which began as Portland Baptist Bible Institute in the winter of 1925.
