Died peacefully on Sunday, January 11, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. Survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Mary Lou, his loving children Kathryn Kretschmer-Weyland and her husband, Greg, of Silver Spring, Maryland and Charles John Kretschmer, and his wife, Sara of Grover, Missouri.

He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Julia and Mark Weyland and Charlie and Claire Kretschmer, as well as his sisters, Mary Agnes Meyer and Margaret Schmitz, both of Dubuque, Iowa. Other survivors include his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shirley and Bill Walsh of Dayton, Ohio, nephew Michael Walsh and niece, Maureen Walsh Zavakos, also of Dayton.

Charles was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Mary Agnes Kretschmer and his brother Fredrick L. Kretschmer, all of Dubuque.

Charles was born August 22, 1925 in Dubuque. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, Class of 1949, and joined the U.S. Air Force prior to the establishment of the Air Force Academy. In 1953 he received a graduate degree in Industrial Administration from the USAF Institute of Technology, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio.

A long-time resident of Bethesda and Rockville, Maryland, he was a founding member of the Anchor Mental Health Association of Washington, D.C. and avidly supported its work.

In 2008 he and his wife were named Affiliates of the Daughters of Charity in recognition of their close work with the Daughters at St. Ann's Infant Home and throughout the southeast United States.

Friends may be received a Pumphrey's Colonial Funeral Home, 300 West Montgomery Avenue, Rockville, Maryland on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Friends may pay respects at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Falls and Dunster Roads, Potomac, Maryland on Thursday, January, 15 from 10 to 11 a.m. when Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Memorial donations may be made to St. Ann's Infant Home, 4901 Eastern Avenue, Hyattsville, Maryland 20782.

Interment with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
