Dr. Warren Marquardt, 75, died after bravely battling myelodysplastic syndromes, a rare blood disorder.

He graduated from Pelican Rapids High School, played freshman football at the University of Minnesota for one year, then attended Vallejo Junior College in Vallejo, Calif., where he played baseball. He then played semi-pro baseball in northern California before enlisting in the Air Force in 1951. He was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base for four years. After an honorable discharge in 1955, he married his wife Alice, and was accepted to the University of Minnesota School of Veterinary Medicine where he earned a bachelor's degree in science, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and a PhD in microbiology and biochemistry. He started as a research fellow in veterinary microbiology at the University of Minnesota, transferred to the University of Maryland as associate professor in 1969, taught veterinary microbiology at the University of Maryland and at Virginia Tech, and retired as full member of the University of Maryland-College Park graduate faculty in 1995. He was appointed Professor Emeritus to the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996.

He & Alice are the parents of Greg Marquardt, Sheila Taylor, Cheryl Huston and Steve Marquardt.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.
