Robert Bruce McRae, 68, a retired Army colonel who served in three wars and commanded the U.S. Army Management School at Fort Belvoir, died of a cerebral hemorrhage Jan. 15 at the Fort Howard Veterans Administration Hospital at Sparrows Point, Md.
Col. McRae, who lived in Alexandria, was born in Lincoln, Neb. He grew up in Washington and graduated from Wilson High School and American University. He was a law student at George Washington University when he was commissioned in the Army in 1941. In 1964, he received a master's degree in international affairs at GWU.
During World War II, he served in Europe. He served in Korea during the conflict there and in Vietnam in 1965 and 1966. Other assignments included NATO in Europe, the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Defense Intelligence Agency, where he was assigned when he retired in 1971.
Col. McRae's military decorations included the Silver Star , the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.
He was a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church and the Association of Former Intelligence Officers.
Survivors include his wife, the former Frances Mason, of Alexandria; a daughter, Pamela of New York City, and three sons, John of New York City, Michael of Mill Valley, Calif., and Robert of Los Angeles.
