John E. Minahan, 81, Army colonel
Retired Col. John E. Minahan, who served in the Army Corps of Engineers, died July 23 of pneumonia at St. Agnes Hospital. He was 81 and lived at Charlestown retirement community in Catonsville.
His 30-year Army career began after he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1940. He served in Europe during World War II and later held command positions in Europe, the Philippines and Korea.
He retired from the Army in 1968 and worked for engineering companies before becoming a project engineer for Prince William County, Va., in 1977. He retired in 1985.
Colonel Minahan, a native of Milwaukee, earned a master of science degree in civil engineering from Massachusetts Institute Technology in 1948.
A memorial service will be held at 1: 30 p.m. today at Charlestown, 719 Maiden Choice Lane, Catonsville.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, the former Eugenia Murphy; a son, Army Lt. Col. John Richard Minahan of Springfield, Va.; two daughters, Milly Minahan Miller of Albuquerque, N.M., and Jeanne Minahan Robinson of Annandale, Va; two sisters, Katherine Minahan Durkin and Margaret Patricia Minahan, both of Milwaukee; and four grandchildren.
