Enlisted at age 31 on August 12, 1863; commissioned an officer in Co. D, 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery Regiment, on August 22, 1863. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on February 24, 1864. Mustered out on May 2, 1864.

Commissioned an officer in Co. E, 1st New York Engineers, on 24 May 24, 1864. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on October 14, 1864. Mustered out on June 30, 1865 at Richmond, VA.

Pension was filed by him as Invalid on April 14, 1877, app # 231,094 from the State of Minnesota; his widow Ellen filed for pension on February 16, 1901 from the State of Minnesota. Company's that he served from this pension information is as follows 1st Lieut. 20th U.S. Inf. U.S. Navy 1st Lieut Co. D. 2nd Mass H.Art. 2nd Lieut Co E. & L. 1st N.Y. Engrs.
