In 1999, after much difficulty in conceiving, Nancy and Kip welcomed their first son with the help of in vitro fertilization. Two years later, on September 11, 2001 they were anxiously awaiting the birth of their second son, when Kip was killed when American Flight 77 struck the Pentagon. Six weeks later, on October 25, Nancy gave birth to their second son.
Despite the loss of her husband, Nancy focused on the needs of others, and started a charity for infertile military couples in her husband's name. Friends and people who heard about her situation and wanted to donate money in Kip's memory were encouraged to donate to the charity which assisted couples with travel and lodging expenses as they receive fertility treatments.
Moving forward and raising her two boys was difficult without her husband, and the loss created a huge void in her life, but she kept moving forward and teaching her boys to think about their father in a happy and positive way
Two years after the birth of her second son, on November 18, 2003, Nancy Melvin Taylor died of cancer and was buried in the same plot at Arlington with her husband. It had been while she was in the hospital delivering her son that the doctors had discovered she had terminal breast cancer. During the last two years of her life, she had lived her life to the fullest she could, and lovingly looked after and raised her two children.
Her two sons, orphans at ages 2 and 4, are now being raised by Kip's brother and his wife. Their college educations will be paid for by the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
