She was the first American nurse buried in English soil, then the first Virginia nurse buried at Arlington with special military honors. In the first graduating class of Achilles High School, Gloucester, Virginia, in 1914, she earned her nursing degree in Baltimore in 1917. She caught the flu during her voyage to England and died there of pneumonia. Buried first at a church in Winchester, she was brought home in 1920 and re-interred at Arlington.

Exhumed on 22 April 1920 by order of the Home Office.
Repatriated to the USA on The Princess Matoika Transport Ship.
