James Ewell Brown Stuart is the son of the famous Confederate Major General J.E.B. Stuart, war strategist in the Civil War and Flora Cooke Stuart (daughter of Gen. Phillip St. George Cooke and Rachel Wilt Hertzog). He wasn't even four years old when his father died.

He married Josephine "Joe" Phillips, 21 Jun 1886 at St. John's Episcopal Church, Hampton, Virginia. Josephine Phillips is the daughter of Col. Joseph Phillips and Mary Ann Marrow Phillips.
