Dean Orville Reiersgaard was born in Alameda County on May 3, 1952 to Truman and Eileen Verona Hagen Reiersgaard. Dean grew up in Castro Valley and graduated from Castro Valley High School in 1970. He started an upholstery business at the Hayward Airport with his father, and it was doing well. He married his high school sweetheart Tricia, and achieved his dream of owning his own plane. He was doing some surveying of property when the airplane appeared to malfunction. Dean struggled to retain control and seemed to be succeeding but he "ran out of sky". The plane hit the ground and burst into flames. Dean and his passenger were both killed on impact.

Dean was the only child of Truman and Eileen Reiersgaard and his loss devastated his parents and his wife as well as his extended family. It brought back sad memories of our Uncle Buster, my dad's and Aunt Eileen's younger brother, who was the pilot of a plane that crashed in 1958, killing all on board. (Dean also left behind his dogs, "Deadalus" and "Athena.") At that time, Dean and Tricia had no children. Amazingly, Tricia discovered that she was approximately 6 weeks' pregnant when Dean was killed. Dean & Tricia's son was born 8 months later and he was named after his dad. Dean loved tinkering with and restoring old cars and motorcycles as well as flying his plane. His son shares many of the same interests.

Dean was my cousin. We grew up 2 miles apart from each other. Because he was only 17 months older than me, he often took the role of the Big Brother I never had. Although I don't miss some of the bossing around, I miss my "big brother" very much.
