S.P. Beighley, one of the pioneers of Shell Rock, was born in Butler County, Pennsylvania. At the age of 19 years he began to learn the trade of tanner and currier, which he followed for several years.

He was married in 1854 to Miss Louisa M. Miller. Two years later they came to this place and settled in the southern part of Shell Rock Township

In 1862 Mr. Beighley enlisted in Co. C, 5th Minn Vol Inf., served in the Indian Massacre, then went south and remained in service for 3 years.
Simon served in Company C 5th Minnesota Infantry during the Civil War.
