In action around Cold Harbor June 4, 1864, Edwin D. (or A.) Alger of Cohoctah Twp, Livingston County was wounded. He had enlisted at Fentonville [Fenton] into Company E. of the 26th Michigan on August 22, 1862, at the age of 32 and was related to Col. Russell Alger of the Michigan Cavalry. He survived the war and mustered out at Alexandria on June 4, 1865, and later lived in Grayling, Michigan (as of 1905). Born on Christmas December 25, 1830, he died on October 19, 1914, buried in the (Old) Elmwood Cemetery.

26th Michigan service included: Camp Jackson, Alexandria, Washington, Suffolk, the New York Draft Riots, & In Washington, D.C. on November 7, 1863, Michigan Relief Agent Julia Susan Wheelock went to Emory and Washington Street Hospital where she saw Edwin Alger, who was very sick, and Arosell Lamb, both of the 26th Michigan.

1864 duties: Wilderness, Po River, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Totopotomoy, Cold Harbor, and his unit also served at Petersburg, Appomattox & in the Grand Review
