George W. Emig, 85, of Port Huron, passed away peacefully in William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, on Monday, May 21, 2001.

He was born to Oswald and Elia Emig on Nov. 18, 1915, in St. Clair, attended the St. Clair Schools and graduated from St. Cair High School in 1934, where he lettered in golf, football and track. His golf team won two state championships, and he held the record for the 100-yard dash in the SCAL for more than 20 years. He joined the Merchant Marine and sailed in the "good ship" Tashmoo under his father, the ship's captain.

On Oct. 10, 1936, George married Mary Sherba. She passed away on Sept. 23, 1993. His special companion for five years, Eva Moran, passed away June 19, 2000.

George was a bartender most of his life and was, at one time, the business agent for the bartenders and waitresses local. He retired from Armbruster's Club after more than 20 years. He was a lifetime member of Willow Ridge Golf Club, where he on several club championships. He was also a member of the Port Huron Lodge 158 L.O.O.M. and the Charles School Post 796 VFW.

He is survived by his four children, Carol (Carl) Cisky, Herndon, Va., Georgia (William) Cherry of Farmington Hills, Richard Emig of Port Huron and Linda Phillips of Farmington Hills; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his brother, Charles (Dorothy) Emig of Harlingen, Texas; his sister, Elizabeth (Russel) Westrick of St. Clair; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be at 11 A.M. Thursday, May 24, 2001, in Smith Family Funeral Home-South 1230 Seventh St. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Mar and Ken Guske, Mike Bacon, Gary and Hank Kelly, Charles Stevens, Dan Armbruster and Greg Webster.

Memorial contributions may be made in George's memory to the American Diabetes Association.
