Joseph William Dyer, Sr. was born August 4, 1909 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. His parents are Marada Alvin Dyer and Mattie Columbus McDonald. He married Nettie Maurine Sheffield on October 3, 1929 in Albany, Oklahoma. He was raised in Bryan County, Oklahoma. He moved to Hobbs, New Mexico in 1939, he later moved to Durant, OK, Fort Sumner, NM and Monahans, TX before returning to Hobbs in January 1946 to reside permantely.

He worked in the oil field for a number of years before establishing J.W. Dyer Pumping Service. He retired in 1970. He died August 23, 1995 in Hobbs, NM. He has three sons Joe Dyer Jr., Marx Dyer of Hobbs, NM and Barry Dyer of Midland, TX
