ANDREW REUBEN DYER
PRIVATE FIRST CLASS DYER, the son of Mrs. Lucinda Dyer, of Sydnorsville, is a member of a fighting unit commended for outstanding service in Italy. The former employee of the Fontaine Converting Works has been in combat service since Jul of 1943. He took part in two invasions, the Sicilian campaign and the attack on Salerno, Italy. As yet, he has escaped injury but had one touch with malaria. In addition to the commendation he has been awarded two Bronze Stars.
The copy of the commendation, issued by Headquarters of the seventh Army, said of his battalion: "The Second Chemical Weapons Battalion (Motorized) is commended for outstanding performance of duty in support of the . . . Division on the 6th of Aug 1943 in Sicily.
"Preceding and in conjunction with the attack of the . . . Combat Team across the . . . river and up Hill . . ., B Company of the Battalion fired white phosphorous shells to set up at 3500-yard rolling smoke screen from the river bed to the ridge of the enemy-held Hill. A and D companies simultaneously fired many WP and HE missions to eliminate opposing centers of resistance. Although the main attack was held up by artillery, which had direct observation of the entire area and friendly artillery and half-tracks had been forced to withdraw, the mortar crews remained and helped to repel a strong enemy counterattack. Later in the day this battalion established a protective smoke screen for two battalions to shift their positions and to withdraw across the stream under cover of darkness, thereby avoiding complete annihilation or capture. The superior performance of the 2nd Chemical Weapons Battalion (Motorized) in the unusually hazardous action described reflects the highest credit on the military forces of the United States and is worthy of the highest commendation."
DYER received his basic training at Fort Eustis, VA, Fort Bragg, NC, Camp Cara Belle, FL, and Camp Pickett, VA. He landed overseas in Jun 1943.
