Margaret (Peggy) H. Howell, 100, died Tuesday in Sheridan, Wyoming at Sheridan Manor.
Born Margaret Whitney Hellier in Rockland, Maine, to E.J. Hellier and Eva Gay Whitney Hellier. Margaret received a B.A. in Classical Studies from Wheaton College in Norton, MA (1931). She taught Latin and Greek in Maine high schools and married John Creighton in 1936 in Rockland. They had a daughter, Clare, in 1940. While John was in the Navy, they moved to Denver, CO to help John recover from TB. He died in 1943.
In Denver, Margaret met John Ashby Howell of Worland, WY and they married in 1947 in Sheridan, WY. Daughters Catherine (b. 1949) and Elizabeth (b. 1950) were born in Denver.
Margaret worked for short periods as a florist and at Sarkisian's in Denver as well as volunteer for the Red Cross. Summers were spent in Story, WY, winters in Scottsdale, AZ while making their home in Denver. Her family credits her longevity to daily mile long walks and love of life.
Margaret enjoyed traveling to Europe, back to her home in coastal Maine and throughout the U.S. She cherished her gardens, books, art, and nature, and inspired interest in these things to everyone who had the privilege to have tea with her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, brother, first husband, and her husband of 53 years, John Howell, who died in 2000 in Denver at 88. She has outlived nearly all her peers.
Margaret is survived by three daughters, Clare Howell and her husband Bill Hill of Brunswick, ME; Catherine Howell of Denver, CO; Elizabeth Howell, and her son Jackson Clarendon, Margaret's beloved grandson of Sheridan, WY; and four nieces, Susan Hellier, Sally Boynton, Louise Flint, and Nancy Eugley. Carmen Mickelson will be forever adored and appreciated as her loving caregiver.
