LOCAL MATTERS.
Tribute of Respect.
At a meeting of the members of the Newbern Bar, held at the Court House on Wednesday, 28th inst., at 11 o’clock, the following proceedings were had:
On motion of Alexander Justice, Esq., Hon. M. E. Manly was called to the Chair.
On motion of George Green Esq., Frederick C. Roberts was appointed Secretary.
The meeting being thus organized the Chairman explained the occasion of the meeting in a few appropriate and touching remarks.
John N. Washington, Esq, then offered the following resolutions accompanying the same with an expression of the deep sentiment of grief entertained by all in the loss of a member of the Bar so able, a citizen so useful, and a companion so genial.
WHEREAS, it has pleased Almighty God to remove from our midst our esteemed fellow citizen, friend and professional brother, George S. Attmore, therefore
Resolved, That by this afflicting dispensation, our whole community is deeply affected; by it society has lost a distinguished and worthy member, the legal fraternity a warm hearted brother, and an ornament, and the people at large a fast friend and faithful exemplar of the present age of our country.
Resolved, That we tender to the family of the deceased our cordial sympathy in their great bereavement. To them his loss is indeed irreparable -- a most devoted husband, a fond parent, a kind and indulgent master; the domestic virtues had no more faithful and earnest illustration than was afforded by his daily, practical life.
Resolved, That we will wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days.
Resolved, That a copy of these Resolutions properly signed be presented to the family of the deceased, and that the Editor of the “Daily Progress” be requested to publish them.
The resolutions were unanimously adopted.
Hon. John R. Donnell then addressed the meeting upon the character of the deceased, giving an earnest and graphic account of his career through life, and enumerating fully the many and ennobling traits which characterized that life.
On motion of Hon. John R. Donnell the meeting adjourned.
M. E. MANLY, Chairman.
