In Aug 1860, they emigrated Künzelsau District, Wüerttemberg, Germany with two daughters, a nephew, and two adult sisters of Josef. They sailed on the ship "Illinois" and arrived in New York, USA on Sep 13, 1860. They went to Philadelphia to stay briefly with relatives. There was imminent talk of war. The LUNZ's feared war and Sophia was pregnant, so they left shortly for Marshall County, Illinois near present day Evans. Their third child, John was born there two days after Christmas of 1860 in Tonica. The next year, they settled into Marshall County, Illinois near present day Evans.
OBITUARY: Sophia A. Freitag was born in Wnerttemberg {sic}, Germany, January 22, 1833. At the age of 23, she was married to Joseph Lunz. To this union ten children were born, two of whom are dead, Elizabeth and Henry Lunz. They came to the United States shortly after {correct: before} the civil war and settled at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Leaving Philadelphia they moved to Illinois the following year where they lived until the spring 1877 when they came to Ellinwood, Kansas. In the year 1901 they left their home and came to Belpre. The following year, 1902, Joseph Lunz died, and from that time since Grandma Lunz made her home with her son, Joe Lunz, Jr. until her death, July 22, 1920. She was of quiet disposition, one who stayed closely at home and gave a mother's kind of care to a large family. "The world may sound no trumpets, ring no bells, the Book of Life, the shining record tells." May the sweet memories of her unselfish life be a silver lining to the dark cloud through which the family are passing. Sympathy is extended the children who are namely: Mrs. Jacob Schomer {sic}, Kingman, Mrs. John Snyder {sic}, Pittsburg, Kansas, Mrs. John Strothman, Hutchinson, Mrs. John Heinz, Kinsley, John Lunz, Wichita, Mrs. N. Graf, Mrs. John Husler and Joe Lunz, Belpre. Funeral services were held at St. Bernard's church. Saturday morning and interment made in St. Peter & Paul's cemetery at Ellinwood, Kansas.
