Served in Civil War from Leon County, Tx with the "Leon Hunters" under Col. John Bell Hood. Of his company of 128 men, only 12 came back & of that 12, 2 were brothers, James Francis & Doyle O'Hanlon Coston Further info: The -homesite- memorial speaks to their homestead that the State of Texas took (for the good of "ALL"), for the purpose of building Bob Sandlin Lake. About 90% of the property is underwater but the actual location of the cabin survived, all that remains is the left over bricks from the chimney & it is within' the boundries of the Bob Sandlin State Park.

His commanding officer was John J. McBride, they were together thru the entire 4 years of the Civil War.
J.J. McBride, # 52450953, is buried in Anderson County, Texas, Palestine in the Palestine City Cemetery.
I note him on my grandfathers memorial to link their association during an important time in their lives.
==========
The foto of the mess plate is what J.F. carried with him thru the war, wisely enough, inside his shirt against his chest.
I guess that would be the Confederate version of today's bullet proof vest. Family lore sez he was shot at and hit during the 3 days battle at Gettysburg and the imprint on the plate is the impact, which saved his life.
