CO-FOUNDER OF STATE SCHOOL FOR DEAF AND BLIND DIES
Harriet Tuttle Bray, co-founder of the Arizona State School for the Deaf and the Blind, and a member of the Pima County Welfare Board for 32 years, will be buried today in private ceremonies.

She died Sunday at Valley House Healthcare, where she had resided for five years. She was 86.

Bray and her father, Henry C White, came to Arizona around 1908 [edit:in 1910] at the request of Territorial Gov George W P Hunt to build the school for the deaf and the blind. She and her father built eight such schools in this country and two in Canada.

Bray was born in Salt Lake City. Before coming to Tucson, her father practiced law in Boston. He became deaf when he was 20 [edit:5] from scarlet [edit:typhus] fever. At age 6, Bray began interpreting for him in the courts.

She and her father were the principal instructors at the school for the deaf and the blind. From 1913 to 1933 she was president of the school's board of regents.

In 1937 Bray was appointed a member of the Pima County Welfare Board, and she served until 1969. She was chairwoman for about 20 years and achieved a near-perfect attendance record for regular and special meetings.

She is survived by a son, William J Bray Jr of El Paso TX and by seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

The private services will be handled by Reilly's funeral home, with burial at Evergreen Cemetery.
