Jean was born October 13, 1922 to the late Clarence C. and Frances D. Balaam of Waukena, California. She passed away in her home on Tuesday October 16, 2007. Her early years were devoted to caring for her ailing father and helping in the daily operations of the family ranch and dairy. As the oldest of seven siblings, she was instrumental in their upbringing.

Jean graduated from Tulare Union High School in 1941. Shortly thereafter, she joined the Armed Forces and was proud to become a Lady Marine. She was stationed at Cherry Point North Carolina from 1942-1946.

She received her Bachelors Degree in Education from what is now known as L.A. State College. She also attended classes at USC where she met her future husband Robert. They were married in 1947. During her long-standing teaching career, she taught at Torrance Elementary School for several years prior to moving to Merced. She has been a resident of Merced for 42 years and continued her teaching at Charles Wright Elementary School in Merced and Elmer Wood Elementary School in Atwater. She retired from teaching in the early 1980's.

Jean was very active in her community prior to and after her retirement. She was a member of the California Teachers Association, Retired Officers Association, AARP, Merced County Republican Women Federated, California Women for Agriculture, American Legion, AMVETS, and Native Daughters of the Golden West. She was a past Republican Woman of the Year for Merced County.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert, sister Billie Nell Hughson, and brother Clayton Balaam. She is survived by her devoted son Jim Stinson and her siblings: Clara Byrd, Mary Lou Starr, Clarence (Bud) Balaam, George Balaam and Nancy Jordan, as well as, many nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.

There will be a viewing Sunday October 21, 2007, between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Peers Lorentzen Funeral Chapel, 132 W. Kern Ave., Tulare. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday October 22, 2007 at Tulare District Cemetery, 900 E. Kern Ave., Tulare.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following: Merced County Historical Society, 21st & "N" St., Merced, CA 95340, Mariposa Pines/Jerseydale Fire Safe Committee, 7106 Snyder Ridge Road, Mariposa, CA 95338, or California Women for Agriculture.
