Owen H. Downing, 71, a lifelong resident of southwest Florida passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2004. Owen was born June 1, 1933 in Cleveland, FL to the late Joseph and Lila Dell (Gibbs) Downing. He grew up in Bonita Springs and graduated from Forth Myers High School. Owen proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Collier County Sheriff's Department. The love of baseball was a significant part of Owen's life. Years ago he was an associate scout for the NY Yankees. His passion for the game inspired him to be involved in the Babe Ruth Baseball League. Owen served as the Babe Ruth Baseball State Commissioner for 10 years. He is survived by his wife Arlene (Paris) Downing, Ft. Myers; three children: Rhonda (Cliff) Linzalone, Bonita Springs; Tonya (Tom) VanScoy, Ft. Myers; Trudy Hunt, Bonita Springs; four stepchildren: Maria, Michael, Anthony and Dominic; eight grandchildren and seven step grandchildren; a brother Edward Downing, Ft. Lauderdale; sisters: Joan Lawhon, Bonita Springs; and Linda Ortengren of Tennessee. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Owen will be held 7:00 PM, Tuesday, August 3, 2003 at the chapel of Ft. Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Boulevard, Ft. Myers.
