"John S. Schwab, Former Resident Buried Today"

"John S. Schwab, 74 former Walsenburg and Huerfano County resident was buried in Gardner this afternoon at 2:30, his body being brought here from California where he died last week.

"Mr Schwab, who was born in Germany, came to the Westcliffe and Gardner area when he was nine years old. In 1908 he came to Walsenburg where he engaged in stock raising and the meat packing business. He was associated with the Schwab-Schafer packing company which has continued under the name of Schafer Packing Co.

"In 1926 he moved to Arizona and has resided in Arizona and California, being engaged in the meat packing and real estate business. He died in Mountain View, Calif., after an illness of two weeks. He is survived by his wife Margaret, one son, Arthur, who came to Gardner for the service and five grandchildren.

"Graveside services were held this afternoon at the Gardner cemetery with the Burress Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements."

The rest of the story:

Johann Simon Schwab, the son of Johann Ernst Schwab and Maria Barbara Heinlein was born in Boxbrunn Germany and actually immigrated with his family in 1895 when he was 14. His younger brother Leonard was the one who was 9. They left Germany March 9, 1895 and got to Custer County on April 1. The trip cost 600 marks. They left because Germany was beginning to mobilize and the boys would have had to take military training. In 1907, Uncle Johnny married Amelia Marie Schmidt and they had one son, Arthur Cleveland Schwab in 1909. Amelia died in 1910. In 1915, John married Elizabeth Beck. They divorced in 1917. Shortly after that, he married Gladys Joy Doughty or McCoy. He divorced Gladys, married a lady named Gertrude. He divorced Gertrude by 1931 before he married Margaret.
