He was the son of Sidney Leroy Carkin and Charlotte Lillian Oldershaw.
Roger was a Veteran of the Korean War

Roger Carkin, 74, a longtime resident of Westford died Sunday March 27, at Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell. He was the husband of Shirley (Woodard) Carkin.
He was born in Groton, on Oct. 8, 1930, son of the late Sydney and Charlotte (Oldershaw) Carkin. He had resided in Westford for the past 45 years.

Mr. Carkin joined the Navy in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1954 after earning several awards, including the National Defense Ribbon, United Nations Medal, Korean Ribbon and the Navy Occupational Medal. He reinlisted in 1956 and was honorably discharged in 1960, after receiving the Good Conduct Medal for the second time.

He worked for Wang Industries and Lawrence Manufacturing, both in Lowell. He later retired from Insco Corp., in Groton after 11 years of service as a maintenance mechanic.

He enjoyed gardening and talking on his CB radio under the handle of Dum-Dum.

Besides his wife, his survivors include three sons, Larry J. Carkin of Lowell, Garry M. Carkin of Townsend and Rodney P. Carkin of Lowell; five grandchildren, Michael, Gregory and Ashley Carkin of Townsend, and Rodney Jr. and Amanda Carkin of Lowell; five brothers, Norman Carkin of Groton, Alfred Carkin of Pepperell, Gerald Carkin of Crystal, Maine, George Carkin of Wells Rivers, Vt., and Sydney Carkin of Oklahoma City; three sisters, Louise Scimemi of Groton, Charlotte Hyden of Maynard and Carol Dicicco of Exeter, N.H.; two aunts, Dorothy Nordstrom of Pepperell and Bertha Regnier of Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also the grandfather of the late Kassandra Carkin.
