He graduated from high school in Unadilla, GA, and then served for four years in the US Navy, including 13 months in Korea. He graduated from Mercer University and received his Master of Divinity degree from South Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as a chaplain at the VA Hospital for 25 years.
He was predeceased by his mother, Ruby Shugart Irwin; his father, George Ernest Irwin; and a sister, Ernestine Irwin Beck. He was survived by his wife; one daughter; one son; three grandsons; one sister; two brothers; one niece; and five nephews.
Visitation was held at Oakey's South Chapel on Monday, September 28, 2009. The memorial service was held on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at Grandin Court Baptist Church. Interment at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
