Chester W. "Bano" Banachowski, 86, passed away on Monday, January 4, 2010, in his home surrounded by his family.

He was born in Toledo on July 28, 1923, to Mary (Galka) and Walter Banachowski.

Chester attended Woodward High School and graduated from Macomber High School in 1941.

He voluntarily joined the U.S. Navy served his country honorably between 1943-1945. He was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean, and Mediterranean Seas.

He attended Rensselaer's Polytechnic Institute in Troy N.Y. for two years, continuing his education at the University of Toledo, graduating in 1948 with a bachelor of engineering degree with mechanical and industrial majors.

He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Ohio. He served as vice president and later president of the Toledo chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He was in part responsible for engaging Mrs. Lillian Gilbreth, wife of the renowned industrial engineer Frank Gilbreth to speak to the chapter of IIE in the late 50's and early 60's.

Books and movies were made in their honor, "Cheaper by the Dozen".

After thirty plus years he retired as Professor Emeritus from the University of Toledo, Chester embarked on his second love, print-making at the Toledo Art Museum. He took part in several shows and was interviewed by the art columnist Sally Vallango, with the Toledo Blade, and his prints were photographed for The Blade's Art column March 30, 1996.

Chester is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 59 years, Nancy (Phillips) Banachowski; children, Lawrence (Dianne) Banachowski of Oxford, MI, Julie (Michael) Kaminski, David (Suzanna) of Geneva, FL, and James (Tamara) Banachowski; brothers, Edward, Andrew (Tanya); nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mary; eldest daughter, Karen Ann Poitinger, and brother, Jerome.

Friends are invited to visit from 2:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 in the Ansberg-West Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Robert Wuellner Officiant. Interment in Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the Parkinson's Foundation of Northwest Ohio.
