Pioneer physician of Scranton. He was the founder of Throop borough and a Civil War doctor. He was one of the first to respond when President Abraham Lincoln called for physicians during the Civil War. He eventually founded Lackawanna Hospital, later to become Scranton State General Hospital, now the site of a veteran's home. He became president of the Scranton City Bank, and also of the Scranton Illuminating, Heat and Power Company.
