Marian Flaget, 88, Halliday, died Sunday, March 9, 2003 at the Hilltop Home of Comfort, Killdeer, where she has been a resident for the past six years.

Marian was born June 2, 1914, the second child of J. Carl and Inga (Pederson) Swenson on the family farm, rural Dodge. She was raised and educated in the Halliday area, receiving a teaching certificate from Dickinson Normal School. Marian taught in Dunn County at several different one-room schools.

In the later afternoon of July 16, 1938, a 1934 Ford drove south, from Halliday, on Highway 8, supposedly not wanting to be noticed (as some people have told the story). When arriving in Dickinson, Oliver Flaget met Marian Swenson and they continued west on Highway 10. Upon reaching the destination of Wibaux, Montana, some teenagers spoke to them, "Oh, you are the couple that want to get married?" Secretive - you bet! The knot was tied and they returned to Dickinson on the same road, but as Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Flaget. Together they returned to the Flaget family farm.

Marian continued to teach for several years and then quit teaching to help on the farm. She loved spending time outside milking cows, tending the chickens, and spending many hours in her favorite flower gardens. Whether with her siblings, children or grandchildren; she was always ready to let her inner-child escape.

Marian is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Marijean and Roger Gissel, Pullman, Wash; Sharlene and Tom Klegstad, Hallock; one son and daughter-in-law, Bill & Shelley Flaget, Halliday; seven grandchildren, Kari Gissel and Jonathan Gissel, Erin Klegstad and Ami Klegstad, Chris Flaget, Sarah Duttenhefner and Margaret Flaget; six great-grandchildren, three brothers and sisters-in-law, Alton and Hulda Swenson, Robert and Alma Swenson, both of Halliday, Charles & Connie Swenson, Glendive, Mont.; four sisters, Dorothy Kurle, Bismarck, Elsie Swenson, Reno, Nev; Margaret Flatin, Fargo; Ruth Tschaekofske, Dodge; numerous nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 43 years, Oliver; and one daughter, Judith.

Services were 10 a.m., Friday, March 14, 2003, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Halliday, with Pastor Steven Schou officiating. Burial was at the Halliday cemetery.

Arrangements by Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
