Frank, the youngest child of Oscar and Caroline von Kochtitsky, took sick with membranous croup and died in a few hours. He was buried in the private burial plot of the Hatcher family, which was, in 1883 at least, about one mile west of New Madrid.
In his biography of his father, Oscar von Kochtitzky and A Search For His Family Origin, Frank's older brother John asserted "This death affected Father more than any other incident in his life that I am aware of."
