He entered the United States Army serving honorably from 1942 until 1948. Harland was in both the Pacific and European theaters.
Harland was united in marriage to Wanda Nading on July 13, 1956. Together they resided in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin for a short time before making their home in Manchester.
Harland worked as a machinist for Iowa Manufacturing Incorporated in Cedar Rapids. He retired after thirty-eight years of service.
Harland was preceded in death by one daughter, Juanita Allison; two grandsons, Christopher Davis Jr. and Michael Johnson; one sister, Mary Alferdson; and his parents.
