Jens Hansen Banke (surname pronounced "BAHN-kah") was born in Oster Lindet, Haderslev county, Denmark, the son of Jorgen Jensen Banke and Maren Hansdatter. The parents, brother (Jeppe Claus) and older sisters (Maren, Ane, Karen, Marie and Johanne) were born in Horne, Svendborg county, while he and sister Laurine were born in Oster Lindet.

James Banks americanized his name when he left his native Schleswig. Family history said that he refused to join the German army, and defiantly flew the Danish flag over his house when Germany took control of the Danish province after the 1866 war between the countries.
