Son of Nathaniel Stanly and Sarah Baldwin.
.
Husband of Zeruah Partridge, with whom he had eight known children: Ruth, George, Sophronia, Sarah B, John E, Henry, and Myron N. and Polly Stanley.
.
[John Stanley donated the land for the cemetery to the town of Poultney. On August 27, 1872, nearly 30 years after his death, at a "historical meeting" in Poultney, Rev. Isaac Newton Sprague insisted that the town procure a grave stone for John Stanley who had contributed so much to the town and whose "remains lie in the yard he gave to the town." Apparently, Stanley had suffered financial reverses and died poor. Before his death he had regained enough to repay all his creditors, but his family was still poor and could not afford a stone. By the end of the meeting $100 dollars had been collected to raise the stone. Information courtesy of Dawn D. Hance, Rutland Co., historian.]
