It seems that it was an act of Providence that this should not have occurred only twenty-four hours before as at that time thirty-five children along with the teacher were in attendance at school. The teacher, J. B. F. Bishop, who occupied a little house which he erected on the school grounds, was not so fortunate. It seems that he had remained home on Saturday morning presumably to finish painting the little house he had erected as a teacherage at the opening of the term.
After the storm was over Mr. Bishop was found bruised and unconscious about two hundred yards from where the house stood and close to some of its ruins. From indications he was in the house at the time the storm struck and was carried to where he was found near its ruins. Mr. Bishop was taken to the home of George Wels. He never regained consciousness and passed away Tuesday morning at 6.30 o'clock.
Mr. Bishop came to Phillips county in January 1920 as a census enumerator. After completing his work he was engaged to teach a term of school in Fairview district No. 1. After a short vacation in August he resumed his work again as a teacher in this same district. Last year Pleasant Valley school board realizing in Mr. Bishop a teacher of rare worth secured his services as teacher of their school and he was again engaged to teach the school for this year. He had just completed his second month of school and was making greater plans for the remainder of his year's work.
Mr. Bishop was a teacher of many years of successful experience and this office will miss his many friendly visits and his words of counsel. His life among us was one of noble example and the boys and girls who came under his guidance as a teacher will not forget his untiring efforts in their behalf. Mr. Bishop took an active part in the work of the county Teachers" Association and the reading circle work. We shall miss him from both of these educational activities.
