Sr Mary Cornelia, age 84, passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, Greensburg.

A native of Altoona PA, Sister Mary Cornelia entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity on September 8, 1944, from Saint Leo Parish, Altoona.

She earned a bachelor's (Business Education) degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a master's (Business Education) degree from the Catholic University of America. A secondary school teacher of business and religion, Sr Cornelia taught students in the dioceses of Altoona-Johnstown, Pittsburgh, and Tucson, Arizona. She also taught during the 1963 summer session at Seton Hill University. In 1964, Sister Cornelia was appointed Novice Director for the Sisters of Charity and in 1974, she was named Administrator of Assumption Hall, the former infirmary and retirement home for the Sisters of Charity. From 1978 until 2000, she ministered as the business manager and bookkeeper for Bishop Guilfoyle High School in Altoona. In 2001, Sr Cornelia was inducted into the Altoona Catholic-Bishop Guilfoyle Ring of Honor in recognition of the contribution she made to Catholic education at Bishop Guilfoyle High School. In reflecting on her more than 50 years as a Sister of Charity, Sister Cornelia said "A love for religious life was nurtured in me from my earliest years by my wonderful parents and so, it is no surprise that I have loved every moment of being one of Mother Seton's Sisters of Charity."

Sr Cornelia was preceded in death by her parents, George M and Lillian M (Schell) O'Friel, a brother, Rev Daniel F. O'Friel, three sisters, Mrs Eugene (Charlotte) Bettwy, Mrs David (Mary) Curry and Mrs Timothy (Lilly M) Welch. She is survived by two brothers, George S and Edward S O'Friel, two sisters, Sister Mary Clementine O'Friel, SC and Mrs John (Zita) Milliron.

Sister Cornelia was interred in the Sisters' Cemetery, Seton Hill, Greensburg, PA.
