His paternal grandparents were Andrew Avery Jr and Eunice (Rowland) Avery.

He married first, on Oct 2,1853 at Lynn,MA, Sarah Elizabeth Pecker. According to Groton Avery Clan, p.871, she died at West Point,WI on May 8,1872.

He married, second, on Sep 4,1878 at Newell,IA, Sarah Carrie (McClure) VanCleve, a widow of George VanCleve. She was born on Jul 7,1836, a daughter of John V McClure and Esther (Alexander) McClure. She died on Jul 11,1910.
