ERIE -- M. Esther Farris Watkins, 91, of Erie, died at 2:55 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2000.

She was born Oct. 1, 1908, at Elk City, to Rollie F. and Martha Dick Farris.

She attended school at Chautauqua and Montgomery counties. She graduated from Coyville High School in 1943. She attended Neosho County Community College at Chanute and taught school for 1 1/2 years.

She lived in Kansas most of her life.

She married C. Henry Watkins on July 7, 1929, at Independence. He preceded her in death May 21, 1985.

She was president of Goodwill Tours, where she worked from 1959 to 1994.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, at Erie, worked in the CWF, and the nursery for 20 years.

She organized the Lucky 13 4-H Club, and served as the leader for more than 25 years.

She also organized the Willing Working and Winning Extension Unit in 1945 and was a charter member, serving more than 50 years.

She was a member of the Pleasant Hour Reading Club and a member of the Erie BPW for 29 years.

She also worked for UNESCO and United Nations in the county and state. She was in charge of collecting for UNICEF since 1960.

She also served on the Advisory Committee for the Snyder Memorial Chapel from 1967 to 1973 at Neosho County Community College.

She was a member of the Erie Chapter No. 136 Order of Eastern Star, receiving her 50-year pin in 1986. She served as Worthy Matron in 1957, 1970, 1978, and 1980. She was a dual member of Emera Chapter at Hepler No. 427 and served as Worthy Matron in 1986. She was Grand Representative of Alabama, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Grand Teller, Fraternal Correspondence, Courtesy Committee, and District Aide.

Survivors include a son, Ralph Watkins, of Erie; a daughter, Ruth E. Tandy, of Erie; many grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother and five sisters.

Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church, of Erie, with Dr. Jeré Wells officiating, assisted by Rev. Fred Jordan and Rev. John Henry Cain. Eastern Star rites will be given at the church.

Burial will be in the East Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at their convenience at the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home of Erie after 9 a.m. Monday.
