Eugene Weed "Gene" was born in Pensacola, FL, the youngest of five children, to William Alfonso Smith and Mary Alice Eugenia Watkins. Although born into the Episcopal Church he became a Methodist as a young man and in later life became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. When Gene was a teenager he and his family moved to Houston, Texas. Gene joined the Naval Reserve in 1931 and served for eight years as a gun captain on a destroyed. Gene met and later married Georgina Evelyn Landwehr, his wife of 73 years. They bought a home in the Houston Heights and raised two sons, George Edward and William Eugene. They lived in this same home for over forty years before moving to Sugar Land, Texas. Gene retired from Halliburtan Oil Well Cementing Company after more than 30 years. At the same time he owned and operated a small radio and television repair shop in the Heights. Gene was a 32nd-degree Mason. Some of his many hobbies were: scuba diving, square dancing, flying single engine airplanes, trailering, rock hunting and jewelry making. Gene survived two serious heart attacks before he was eventually overcome by Alzheimer's Decease.
