He was a farmer and he served as Private with Company F, 108th Regiment, Virginia Militia, Confederate Army during the Civil War. Brownlee and his brother James A. Parker both enlisted on March 24, 1862 in Union, West Virginia. They were sons of Elizabeth Young and James Parker.


Brownlee was married to Sarah P. Kennedy on March 4, 1863 in Monroe County, Virginia, now West Virginia, then to Nancy Ann Lively Biggs on October 2, 1869 in Monroe County, West Virginia.
